My name is Kristina Depew and I have been a full-time kindergarten teacher here at The Academy since 2014. As a teacher, my goal is to instill a lifelong love of learning in my students. I believe that it is very important for students to learn in a structured, yet loving environment that feels safe to them, both emotionally and academically. I have high expectations, yet also work hard to meet each student where they are, and help them grow from there. I make sure to know each of my students on a personal level so that I can understand how to meet their needs and best support them as students and as individuals. I love to have fun while we are learning and it's important for me to make sure that my students feel loved and understood so that they enjoy coming to school every day. One way I build these relationships with students is by having a Star of the Week. My Star gets to bring a friend to join me for lunch. I love these times of getting to know my students in a casual and fun setting. By the end of the year I make sure that each of my students has lunch with me at least three times.
If you ask my students what I most love about teaching they will quickly tell you "teaching us to read!" I am very passionate about literacy and love seeing my students light bulb moments when reading begins to click for them. When students discover that they can read on their own is the most magical part of being a kindergarten teacher!
I am the proud mom of identical twin boys who are second graders here at The Academy. I am an avid sports fan and love spending time with my family, being outdoors, traveling, reading, and watching my boys play soccer and baseball. More than anything else, I just love being a mom! I have a Bachelors Degree in Spanish and International Studies from Kenyon College (a small liberal arts school in Ohio) in 2001, and a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Metro State in 2014.
